Emphasis is placed on avoiding legal missteps that can lead to inadmissible evidence or personal liability. Using real-world examples and Maine case law\, students will build confidence in making constitutionally sound decisions in the field. This class addresses law enforcement interaction with civilians outside of those searches and seizures supported by a warrant. \nCourse Objectives: \n\nDefine and apply key Fourth Amendment principles\, including reasonable suspicion and probable cause.\nDistinguish between consensual encounters\, investigative detentions\, and arrests.\nIdentify what constitutes a lawful search or seizure\, including warrant exceptions.\nUnderstand legal standards surrounding vehicles\, homes\, and electronic searches.\nDevelop liability awareness to reduce personal and departmental risk during enforcement actions.\n\nEquipment Needed: \n\nNone

You will learn: \n\nHow to prepare for difficult interviews\,\nThe true nature of rapport and how to develop rapport with even the most challenging subjects\,\nSpecific models for developing rapport in an interview\,\nHow memory works and how to help victims and witnesses remember more accurate details\,\nHow best to use evidence\, and\nModern science-based methods of detecting deception.\n\nWithin the course we also discuss how we can best manage the uncertainty and ambiguity that is present in almost all investigations and the inherent cognitive biases that can impact our thinking in the investigative and interview processes. \nCourse Objectives: \n\nUnderstand the basic psychology of effective interpersonal communication.\nRecognize and control for common cognitive biases.\nUnderstand the basic methodology for interview planning and preparation.\nUnderstand the basic components of rapport.\nUnderstand and be able to apply the BASE Model of Rapport and the Interpersonal Behavior Wheels model.\nUnderstand the basic components of memory and apply memory enhancing mnemonics.\nDifferentiate between science and pseudoscience in deception detection and apply verbal-based methods of credibility assessment.\nEffectively use available evidence in an interview with late disclosure of key evidence.\n\nEquipment Needed: \n\nNotetaking materials\n\nMLEAP Accreditation Standard: \n\nThis course meets MLEAP Standard 7.07 – Interrogation\n\n			\n				Download MLEAP Training Proof
