DESCRIPTION:Instructor:\nColton Seale \n			\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				Science Based Interview & Interrogation\nApril 6 @ 8:00 am – April 8 @ 4:00 pm\nThis course provides an introduction to science-based\, rapport-based interview and interrogation (I&I) techniques\, the same techniques in which FBI and CIA interviewers are trained. You will learn: \n\nHow to prepare for difficult interviews\,\nThe true nature of rapport and how to develop rapport with even the most challenging subjects\,\nSpecific models for developing rapport in an interview\,\nHow memory works and how to help victims and witnesses remember more accurate details\,\nHow best to use evidence\, and\nModern science-based methods of detecting deception.\n\nWithin the course we also discuss how we can best manage the uncertainty and ambiguity that is present in almost all investigations and the inherent cognitive biases that can impact our thinking in the investigative and interview processes. \nCourse Objectives: \n\nUnderstand the basic psychology of effective interpersonal communication.\nRecognize and control for common cognitive biases.\nUnderstand the basic methodology for interview planning and preparation.\nUnderstand the basic components of rapport.\nUnderstand and be able to apply the BASE Model of Rapport and the Interpersonal Behavior Wheels model.\nUnderstand the basic components of memory and apply memory enhancing mnemonics.\nDifferentiate between science and pseudoscience in deception detection and apply verbal-based methods of credibility assessment.\nEffectively use available evidence in an interview with late disclosure of key evidence.\n\nEquipment Needed: \n\nNotetaking materials\n\nMLEAP Accreditation Standard: \n\nThis course meets MLEAP Standard 7.07 – Interrogation\n\n			\n				Download MLEAP Training Proof

This course offers a structured yet adaptable approach to securing critical evidence\, interviewing witnesses\, and preparing thorough documentation for successful prosecution and liability prevention. Students will explore the mindset of the Offender and understand the categories of Offender profiles to apply to unknown assailant investigations. Additional focus will be placed on victim-centered practices\, forensic tools\, and interagency collaboration specific to Maine’s investigative resources. \nCourse Objectives: \n\nIdentify best practices for collecting\, preserving\, and analyzing evidence in sexual assault cases.\nUnderstand the Offender mindset and categories of Offender profiles\nGain proficiency in the use and storage of sexual assault kits and collaborate effectively with Children’s Advocacy Centers.\nLearn trauma-informed strategies for interviewing victims and engaging them with appropriate support resources.\nDevelop comprehensive documentation skills that support prosecution and reduce agency liability.\n\nEquipment Needed: \n\nNone
