Today’s cases involve an array of challenges\, including drug-impaired driving\, legalized marijuana\, and shifting legal standards. From the initial roadside encounter to courtroom testimony\, this training prepares officers to conduct thorough\, legally sound investigations. Special emphasis is placed on identifying and articulating impairment related to Cannabis\, Opiates\, and other substances. \nSponsored by the Maine Bureau of Highway Safety\, this class will review impaired driving investigations including: the initial stop\, chemical testing\, testifying in court and BMV. DESCRIPTION:Instructors:\nScot Mattox\, Esq \nJoshua Saucier\, Esq. \nJohn Roma \n			\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				MCJA Certified SFST Refresher Training with Wet Lab\nMay 21 @ 8:00 am – 4:00 pm\nStandardized Field Sobriety Training (SFST) Refresher Training is intended for officers who have previously completed the 24-hour NHTSA DWI Detection and Standardized Field Sobriety Testing program but did not achieve proficiency within the allotted 6-month period. \nThis class provides attendees the opportunity to evaluate enough volunteers to demonstrate proficiency before an MCJA Certified Instructor to be deemed proficient in the Administration of the Standardized Field Sobriety Tests by the Maine Criminal Justice Academy. \nOfficers who have already achieved proficiency may also attend as a skills refresher to reinforce best practices and maintain competency. \nCourse Overview: \nSFST Refresher Training is designed for law enforcement officers at the State\, County\, and local levels who have successfully completed the NHTSA/IACP-approved DWI Detection and Standardized Field Sobriety Testing Training Program. \nThe SFST Refresher Training Program is intended to improve the overall consistency in the administration of SFSTs by individual officers and help them in: \n\nRecognizing and interpreting evidence of DWI\nAdministering and interpreting scientifically validated sobriety tests\nDescribing OUI evidence clearly and convincingly\nReviewing updates in case law and research studies\n\nWet Lab Training Included: \nWet Lab Training provides a controlled\, hands-on learning environment where: \n\nVolunteers are dosed with alcohol to reach varying levels of impairment\nOfficers practice Standardized Field Sobriety Testing (SFST) techniques in front of a certified instructor.\nAttendees are provided an opportunity to demonstrate proficiency in the Administration of the SFSTs in front of an MCJA Certified Instructor to become deemed proficient in the administration of the standardized field sobriety tests.\n\nWho Should Attend? \n\nLaw Enforcement Officers / OUI Prosecutors / BMV Hearings Examiners\nOfficers needing to complete SFST proficiency requirements\nSFST practitioners seeking refresher training\nOfficers looking to strengthen courtroom articulation and roadside evaluation skills\nOUI Prosecutors and BMV Hearings Examiners seeking an in-person observation of the OUI Investigation process and enhanced knowledge of alcohol’s impairing effects.\n\nCost: \nThere is no cost to attend this training as it is sponsored by the Maine Bureau of Highway Safety except for the Wet Lab exercise.
