Promotional Assessment Center
The gold standard of promotional testing.
At Dirigo Safety, we design assessments that go beyond the written exam.
Our customizable process simulates real-world conditions so law enforcement candidates can demonstrate the knowledge, leadership, and decision-making skills needed to succeed on day one of their promotion.
What Is an Assessment Center?
An Assessment Center is a structured, job-related process where candidates complete a series of real-life exercises while being observed by trained evaluators. These scenarios reflect the challenges supervisors and leaders face in the field—allowing agencies to make fair, informed promotion decisions.
Our assessors are experienced chiefs, supervisors, and managers who evaluate candidates on critical leadership skills including:
- Supervision & Leadership – applying proven management concepts and theories
- Communication – oral, written, and non-verbal effectiveness
- Conflict Resolution – handling personnel and community challenges with confidence
- Critical Thinking – analyzing facts and making sound, timely decisions
- Planning & Organization – prioritizing tasks, managing resources, and meeting goals
- Integrity & Professionalism – modeling ethics, values, and organizational standards
What Candidates Can Expect
Assessment Centers are interactive and scenario driven. Exercises may include:
- Role-Play Scenarios – Simulations of daily supervisory challenges, such as addressing officer misconduct, shift conflicts, or performance issues.
- In-Basket Exercise – Candidates manage a stack of memos, complaints, reports, and internal communications under timed conditions, replicating real supervisory workload.
- Critical Thinking Exercises – Written and oral responses to complex, job-related situations.
- Knowledge Testing – Maine-specific written exams designed by Dirigo Safety covering:
- Criminal Law
- Motor Vehicle Law
- Cannabis & Liquor Laws
- Case Law and LEOM
- MCJA Mandatory Policies & Procedures
Exams are proctored and delivered at your department for convenience and security.
