Our Story

Like most high school boys in a beach town, becoming a lifeguard at the local beach was the ultimate summer job for earning money and meeting girls. However, my dad had different plans for my summer employment. As summer was looming, we struck a deal: I would apply for both a lifeguard and a summer reserve officer position. The catch? I had to accept whichever offer came first. Unbeknownst to me, that summer would shape the path for my future in law enforcement.

During my 26 years in Maine law enforcement, the calling to protect and serve was wholeheartedly accepted. While advancing through the ranks to become a sergeant, I also devoted countless nights and weekends to earning degrees in criminology, public policy, and a Juris Doctor in Law. Each promotion and academic achievement only strengthened my commitment to making a positive impact in law enforcement, the Maine judicial system, and my community.

As retirement approached, a realization emerged regarding the discarding and underutilization of expertise among retired officers. Their valuable insights and experiences were not largely shared with younger officers, creating a knowledge gap that mentorship could fill. My thoughts turned to how to facilitate the transfer of wisdom—stories of high-stakes decisions and lessons learned—to benefit the next generation of officers. In 2016, I founded Dirigo Safety, LLC with the goal of creating a platform for law enforcement officers to educate and train peers, departments, and even the private sector.

As detailed in the following pages, Dirigo Safety proudly provides expert training and consultation in public safety and risk management to law enforcement agencies, state organizations, and workplace environments. I’m truly humbled and committed to operating a business where retired and active officers provide guidance and support to their peers and the public.

This year brings exciting times at Dirigo Safety, from expanding online and in-person training to strengthening relationships with departments across the state to provide solutions that meet their needs. Thanks to invaluable guidance and support from many committed officers, Dirigo Safety has grown into a respected business, expanding its reach into other states across New England.

On a personal note – Years later, I learned that my dad had instructed the York Recreation Department not to offer me a summer position until after the Police Department. Well, played, Dad.

And now you know the backstory….
