Designed for newly assigned investigators and patrol officers who are interested in developing investigative skills and pursuing a career in criminal investigations, this course provides participants with the foundational investigative skills needed to conduct a criminal investigation from the initial complaint through case preparation for prosecution. Participants will learn the fundamentals of crime scene assessment, evidence collection and processing, witness interviews and statement gathering, and the legal requirements for obtaining search and arrest warrants. Participants will also receive sample affidavits for search and arrest warrants, as well as case review checklists to assist in preparing cases for submission to prosecutors.

This course also covers custodial interrogations, investigative resources available to support case development, and the preparation of clear, accurate reports that support successful prosecution.

Course Objectives:

  • Understand the roles and responsibilities of a criminal investigator within the Maine/Federal Criminal Justice System.
  • Understand constitutional and statutory requirements that govern criminal investigators including search and seizure, interrogations (custodial/non-custodial) and operating within guidelines of SOPs.
  • Develop investigative plans for systematic investigations using current best practices.
  • Conduct effective interviews of victims, witnesses, and suspects using legally defensible and ethical techniques.
  • Identify, document, collect, preserve and submit physical evidence while maintaining chain of custody.
  • Identify resources and other agencies to support and assist your investigations.
  • Prepare clear, accurate, and complete investigative reports for prosecution.

MLEAP Accreditation Standard:

  • This course meets the following MLEAP Standards:
    • 7.06 – Miranda Warning
    • 7.07 – Interrogation
    • 7.08 – Search and Seizure Warrants (only partially meets standard)
    • 7.11 – Preliminary Investigations
