First Amendment Considerations for Public Safety

While mostly considered while addressing First Amendment auditors and protests, achieving an understanding of the nature and extent (including the obligations and limitations) of the First Amendment’s guarantees of freedom of religion, freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom to assemble peacefully, and freedom to petition the government for a redress of grievances is a benefit both to law enforcement personnel and civil society.

Course Objectives:

• The Role of State and Local Law Enforcement at First Amendment Events.
• Preparing for a potential First Amendment audit.
• Limitations on a law enforcement officer’s speech.
• Exceptions to the First Amendment’s guarantee of freedom of speech.
