This comprehensive course is designed for law enforcement officers navigating the evolving complexities of OUI (Operating Under the Influence) investigations. Today’s cases involve an array of challenges, including drug-impaired driving, legalized marijuana, and shifting legal standards. From the initial roadside encounter to courtroom testimony, this training prepares officers to conduct thorough, legally sound investigations. Special emphasis is placed on identifying and articulating impairment related to Cannabis, Opiates, and other substances.
Sponsored by the Maine Bureau of Highway Safety, this class will review impaired driving investigations including: the initial stop, chemical testing, testifying in court and BMV. This course puts a significant focus on drug impairment (especially Cannabis and Opiates).
Course Objectives:
- Understand and apply the elements of OUI law to both alcohol and drug-impaired driving cases.
- Identify and articulate signs of operational impairment during roadside interviews and field sobriety testing.
- Make informed and defensible arrest decisions based on observed impairment and supporting evidence.
- Properly handle chemical testing procedures and understand related legal precedents.
- Prepare effective reports and provide credible, confident testimony in both court and BMV hearings.
