Prosecutorial Understanding of DREs

July 29 @ 8:00 am – 12:00 pm EST

This course provides prosecutors with an overview of the Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) program and how it is applied in impaired driving and drug-related cases. Participants will review the history of the DRE program, the scientific studies supporting it, the seven drug categories, and how the DRE matrix used to identify impairment.

The training also focuses on the courtroom application of DRE evidence, including strategies for effectively presenting DRE testimony at trial. Prosecutors will gain practical insight into explaining the DRE process to a jury and addressing common defense challenges.

The training is designed for prosecutors but may be useful to officers who are considering the DRE program in the future or for DREs who want a refresher on foundational material.
