Sexual assault investigations are among the most complex and sensitive cases a detective or prospective investigator may encounter. This course offers a structured yet adaptable approach to securing critical evidence, interviewing witnesses, and preparing thorough documentation for successful prosecution and liability prevention. Students will explore the mindset of the Offender and understand the categories of Offender profiles to apply to unknown assailant investigations. Additional focus will be placed on victim-centered practices, forensic tools, and interagency collaboration specific to Maine’s investigative resources.
Course Objectives:
- Identify best practices for collecting, preserving, and analyzing evidence in sexual assault cases.
- Understand the Offender mindset and categories of Offender profiles
- Gain proficiency in the use and storage of sexual assault kits and collaborate effectively with Children’s Advocacy Centers.
- Learn trauma-informed strategies for interviewing victims and engaging them with appropriate support resources.
- Develop comprehensive documentation skills that support prosecution and reduce agency liability.
