Instructional Goal:
This course of instruction will provide students with a basic understanding of mental illnesses commonly encountered by Correctional Officers and general knowledge of crisis de-escalation and negotiation.
Objectives:
After this course of instruction, the student will be able to:

• Identify Common Major Mental Illnesses in Correctional Facilities
• Understand How Illnesses Can Co-Occur with Substance Abuse
• Identify the Correctional Officer’s Roles as First Point of Contact
• Identify Basic Crisis Intervention Skills
• Understand the Role of Crisis Negotiation Teams
• Understand Hunger Strikes
