Field Training Officer (FTO) Program Support

FTO Training

Built With You, For You.

A strong FTO program does more than train, it ensures consistency, reduces liability, and prepares new officers for success. Without structure, critical areas can be overlooked, leading to gaps in performance and accountability.

Our program is especially designed for rural and mid-sized agencies across New England (and beyond). Using the proven San Jose Model as a framework, we work directly with agency administration, training coordinators, and FTO supervisors to ensure your program is not only compliant but truly functional for your department.

What We Provide

When you partner with Dirigo Safety, you get more than templates—you get a guided process that’s collaborative, sustainable, and customized.

FTO Program Support Includes:

  • Structured, sustainable program design
  • Clear roles for supervisors, coordinators, and FTOs
  • A personalized training timeline (rotations, testing, evaluations)
  • A custom library of forms and documents (DORs, WORs, recommendations, probation extensions, etc.)
  • Consultant guidance with Zoom or in-person collaboration
  • Final review, training, and program launch

Our Process

  1. Assessment – Interview leadership, review policies, current practices, and training records.
  2. Needs Analysis – Identify and prioritize what your agency requires, with time estimates.
  3. Action Plan – Create a step-by-step plan for program design and implementation.
  4. Collaboration – Work side-by-side with agency reps—your team does the work, we guide and support.
  5. Training – Conduct group training for FTO supervisors, coordinators, and administrators on the new program and materials.
  6. Launch & Review – Collect feedback, finalize materials, and conduct closing surveys for quality assurance.

Additional Support

We also offer additional support based on agency needs, including, but not limited to: assistance with interviews, audit of current FTOs (via form reviews, ride-alongs, or observation), one-on-one training for FTO leadership roles, and recommendations for ongoing training or resources.
