What’s Included in an Assessment?
Our Assessments are structured, job-related evaluations designed to mirror the real challenges today’s supervisors and leaders face. Through a series of interactive, scenario-based exercises, candidates are observed by experienced chiefs, supervisors, and managers who assess performance across critical leadership competencies.
Candidates can expect a combination of exercises that evaluate supervision and leadership, communication, conflict resolution, critical thinking, planning and organization, and integrity and professionalism, including:

Role-Play Scenarios – Realistic simulations of supervisory situations, such as addressing officer misconduct, resolving shift conflicts, and managing performance issues, while demonstrating effective communication, leadership, and professionalism.

In-Basket Exercise – Candidates prioritize and respond to memos, complaints, reports, and internal communications under timed conditions, showcasing organization, decision-making, and the ability to manage competing demands.

Critical Thinking Exercises – Written and oral responses to complex, job-related scenarios that require sound judgment, problem-solving, and clear communication.

Knowledge Testing – Maine-specific written exams developed by Dirigo Safety that assess a candidate’s understanding of key legal and procedural areas.
All exercises are designed to provide a fair, comprehensive evaluation of each candidate’s readiness to lead, while giving agencies the insight needed to make confident, informed promotion decisions.
Dirigo Safety Promotional Exam (DSPE)
The Dirigo Safety Promotional Exam is a Maine relevant and economical alternative to “canned” promotional examination administration. The DSPE represents original work by experienced Maine law enforcement officers who have served in various capacities with law enforcement agencies throughout Maine.
The exam is designed to encourage officers to increase their knowledge of and ability to understand and apply topics that are directly relevant to Maine law enforcement officers. It is created generally for First Line Supervisors but can be customized to an individual department’s needs.
