Basic Death and Homicide Investigations

About

From 911 to prosecution.

This class, taught by longtime Maine State Police Detectives Michael Chavez and Abbe Chabot (Ret.) is intended for first responders, prospective detectives, active investigators and prosecutors.

This three day certification-level class will provide students with step-by-step instruction about the initial response to a major crime or death, scene preservation, and documentation intended to ensure a complete and legal investigation regardless of criminality or prosecution.

The student will gain proficiency in:

  • understanding the death process,
  • types of deaths,
  • and indicators to guide the student within their investigations in concert with the Maine Attorney General’s protocol for death investigations.
  • evidence identification and collection,
  • witness identification
  • interviewing,
  • as well as the autopsy process.

Case studies will be presented to solidify the applications above, and class participation is required to demonstrate proficiency in these principles.
