Instructional Goal

This course introduces students to driving dynamics and emergency vehicle operations.  Prospective law enforcement officers will learn the importance of driver ability and attitude, the factors in vehicle operation, and the tactics and procedures to use when operating an emergency vehicle under emergency conditions.  Legal liability is outlined along with the importance of conducting pre-shift vehicle inspections.

Performance Objectives

At the end of this unit of instruction, the student will be able to accomplish the following objectives as outlined in the lesson:

X.X.1  Identify two benefits of a pre-shift vehicle inspection and inventory.

X.X.2 Identify at least three geographical patrol area factors that influence driving. 

X.X.3 Identify three of the four factors that affect stopping distance of the vehicle and alter driver response time.

X.X.4  Identify three of the four key components of defensive driving in a patrol setting under non-emergency driving conditions.

X.X.5 Identify four of the five visual defense tactics to employ during an emergency response.

X.X.6  Identify 4 of the 5 categories of driving techniques to employ during an emergency response.

X.X.7  Identify why officers must rely more on personal caution than on emergency warning devices on the vehicle.

X.X.8   Identify three of the five legal privileges granted to law enforcement officers when operating an emergency vehicle in an emergency.

X.X.9  Identify the 3 legal requirements that law enforcement officers must follow to exercise the privileges in performance objective

X.X.10 Identify 3 of the 4 areas of potential liability when officers misuse an emergency vehicle.
