MLEAP STANDARD

3.02 Use of Deadly Force Training

The agency has a written directive on training its sworn personnel at least annually in the proper use of deadly force.

6.01 Authorization to Use Force

The Agency has a written directive that authorizes designated employees to use only the physical force that is reasonable to achieve the desired legal objective.

6.02 Authorization of Deadly Force

The Agency has a written directive that authorizes police officers to use deadly force when the officer reasonably believes that there is an imminent threat of serious bodily injury or death to his or her life or a third person.

Course Description

This course will provide an overview of the legal constraint on use of physical force in performing law enforcement functions.

Performance Objectives

  • Identify the situations in which use of physical force – deadly and nondeadly – is  authorized.
  • Identify the limits that the Constitution, Maine law, agency policies, and your own training place on the use of force.
  • Identify and describe the force concept and its application to law enforcement.
