Instructional Goal: 

This class is a basic refresher for current law enforcement officers. The course is based upon the Maine Criminal Justice Academy basic law enforcement training class of the same name. The instructional goal of the class is to give  students an understanding of the factors dealing with the vulnerable constituents of our society and strategies for effective service to this population. This includes: the elderly, the homeless, the mentally ill, suicidal, and those who may be physically, mentally or emotionally disabled. 

Objectives:

2.8.1 Identify problems of the elderly and other vulnerable individuals relevant to law enforcement officers.

2.8.2 Identify legal requirements regarding protective custody of a mentally ill person. (34-B M.R.S.A. § 3862).

2.8.3 Identify proper procedures to conduct investigations regarding a reportedly mentally ill person.

2.8.4 Identify symptoms of a person who is mentally ill.

2.8.5 Identify verbal, behavioral and environmental cues that help identify a person with an emotional disturbance.

2.8.6 Identify proper techniques to approach and/or calm person who may attempt suicide.

2.8.7 Identify techniques to calm emotionally upset persons.

2.8.8 Identify proper procedures for conducting investigation for suicide attempt.

2.8.9 Identify proper procedures to transport persons who are a threat to their own or other’s safety.

2.8.10 Identify how to respond to people who are physically or mentally challenged and special needs.

2.8.11 Identify issues of concern regarding the physically or mentally challenged and special needs population.

2.8.12 Identify crisis intervention skills needed in dealing with the physically or mentally challenged and special needs.

2.8.13 Identify and describe items of information that should be included in a community referral handbook.

2.8.14 Identify considerations for interaction with individuals with symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease.

2.8.15 Identify considerations for interaction with individuals with symptoms of hearing impairment.

2.8.16 Identify considerations for interaction with individuals with homeless issues.

2.8.17 Identify considerations for interaction with individuals with symptoms of autism.
