Overview

The Department of Public Safety is offering a free 90-minute training via Zoom on using Maine’s protection from substantial threats (“yellow flag”) law. The training will promote the maximal use of the law to protect community safety and will focus on:

A step-by-step walk-through of the weapons restriction order process.
Establishing probable cause for protective custody and a likelihood of serious harm, and probable cause that a mentally ill person possesses or may acquire dangerous weapons.
Scheduling a telehealth weapons restriction assessment and what to expect from the medical practitioner.
Post-assessment steps to ensure a successful weapons restriction order.
Review of recent weapons restriction order cases, and frequently asked questions.
